Wisconsin exempts agricultural buildings from the state commercial building code, which means a genuine farm structure on working agricultural land often faces a lighter path than a residential or commercial building would. County and town zoning still apply, and you will typically need a zoning permit to confirm setbacks and land use. Requirements vary considerably between a rural northern town and a county in the Madison or Milwaukee orbit, so confirm with your county zoning office before scheduling delivery. This is the most important engineering question for a Wisconsin barn, and we treat it that way. Ground snow loads in the state range from roughly 30 pounds per square foot in the southern counties to considerably higher in the far north, so we specify structural components for your county and site rather than applying a single statewide standard. That means reinforced truss systems and, where appropriate, a steeper roof pitch that sheds accumulation instead of carrying it. A barn engineered for a southern climate is not something you want to find out about during a February storm.
